Ian played for NCC from 1979 to the club’s final season, interrupted by overseas work postings in Australia and the United States during 1993-5 and 1997-2008. His Australian adventures saw him play for Yarra Park in the Mercantile CA League in Melbourne scoring several ‘tons’ in their 75-over format at the time.
He was a very consistent top-order bat and a brilliant outfielder in his pomp, highlighted by playing a part in three run outs in a Stone Cup Semi. He also enjoyed a role as a part-time spin wizard.
His only Nomansland league hundred was an unbeaten 122 at Beaulieu in the New Forest League. He also shared in a Village KO stand of 164 for the second wicket at Godshill with brother Gary, with both scoring 80’s. One of his more explosive innings came in a ten-wicket win at Wellow. Chasing 130 to win he scored an unbeaten 91 that included six maximums into the housing estate behind the bowler’s arm. John Barrett was pedestrian as his partner in that victory!
Ian was a committed club man for Nomansland over the years, highlighted when for 2 seasons he commuted from Essex every weekend to perform. In the last couple of years, Ian became a middle-order icon, either going in when the side was in trouble and digging them out, or going in to fire off a quick fire 40 or 50 to take the side to a big score.
