On the first league weekend of the season we travelled west to Bournemouth to take on Winton. With skipper Tom Arnold not available due to being whipped harder than horse at the Grand National on the final stretch, I found myself as skipper and called correctly to field first.
I went with the 2 OAPS to open the bowling in Ginge and J-mac. Winton got off to a quick start and got to 29 before South African rearranged their skippers stumps. J-mac than bowled his classic slower ball to remove their number 3, Tom Arnold now has to accept this ball as serious weapon in our armory. Ginge bowled to the left handed opener, who had more swipes than I had on Tinder in 2024, before removing him and the number 4 next ball to be on a hat trick which he bottled. At 44-4 we were on top.
J-mac bowled 9 straight through, he was blowing harder than the wind after Ben Arnold had a curry, but Sergio replaced Ginge and bowled with good pace to remove their middle order to leave them 89-7 which included a great slip catch from Kaush. Jack, Dylan and Ben bowled well but to no avail.
I brought Ginge back and tried myself with some slower stuff. We removed their number 9 who played well for 34 with Kaush’s second slip catch of the day. After Ginge and Jmac had a back and forth about field settings ,and are probably still having a go at each other now, we bowled them out for 179 off 39.5 overs with Ginge, Serg and myself with 3 each and Jmac with one. We were committed in the field with Chandler and Toby in particular putting their bodies on the line. We did however bowl 26 wides!
With no Tom, I asked Sergio to open with Charlie and the pair got off to a good start before Serg middled one to mid off to depart for 9. In came Jack with him and Charlie batting watchfully until Charlie hit some lusty blows over their spread field. The pair put on 55 before Charlie was removed for a well constructed 36. We were 78-2 at drinks. Jack was removed first ball after drinks for 28. This meant Dylan, on 1s debut, came in at 5 to join Ollie at the crease. Ollie got one that got big on him and spooned it up in the air and we were 89-4 fearing a crumble.
Ginge joined Dylan and Ginge’s innings was a bit like Kaush in bed, short and sweet, as he went 4 4 4 1 then out by a dirty swing across the line. This brought Kaushal to the crease and he was a spectator as Dylan went through an array of strokes including some massive 6s as the pair put on 41 before Kaush departed.
At 146-6 this brought Chandler to the crease who creamed some much need boundaries including a glorious one through cover to take us with in touching distance of the win before he departed. Jmac joined Dylan at the crease with 10 needed and after a 5 wides and with a Dylan 4 the game was won with Dylan finishing on 44* off 41 balls to win by 3 wickets.
A toss up for Man of the Match between Ginge and Dylan. Despite an electric opening spell from Ginge I’ve got to give it to Dylan for that innings on 1s debut, without that we get nowhere near them.
A great win after last season’s league campaign and defiantly something to build on. Thanks to Teresa for scoring in very windy conditions. You can see her work below.
Overall a game played in great spirts by both sides and we look forward to welcoming Winton to ours later in the season.
