Left-handers dominate as threes secure a dominant win

Bournemouth 5th XI v Bramshaw 3rd XI – HCL Division 6SW, Match Report by Tom Mason

After being asked on Friday afternoon if the fixture could be reversed, the threes won the toss at Nomansland and batted.

Joe McNeilly (49) and Harry Burnham (78) once more shared a brilliant opening stand as we raced to 75-0 after ten.

The pair continued to battle well despite the bowling improving as the visitors struggled to get to grips with the nature of Nomansland, getting their field placements in a muddle.

However, two balls before drinks Burnham was dismissed for a superb 78 and he looked back to his fluent best with the opening pair sharing 131 for the first wicket.

The breaks were put firmly on though, when the away side’s skipper picked up three wickets in an over to put us on the back foot as we were reduced to 142-4 and in serious danger of ruining the strong start.

Despite this, Chris Hewlins (35*) and Stu Stickland (83) rebuilt superbly and added a partnership of 127 in just 17 overs to take us well beyond 200 and secure maximum batting points in the process.

Stickland fell, leaving Tom Mason (1*) to face the final delivery of the innings, which he reverse sweeped and struck well but it was well fielded meaning one was added to the total as we finished up on 270-5 from our 40 overs.

After tea, Ben Lindsay (2-37) and Ollie Hensel (0-25) opened up.

The visitors battled hard and were frustratingly scoring one boundary an over which meant they were staying just below the required rate but keeping themselves in the game.

Despite this, Lindsay picked up a wicket apiece in his final two overs to check the away side’s progress well.

Debutant Ethan Lindsay (2-33) was then introduced into the attack and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact, picking up a couple of crucial wickets, including a smart return catch of his own bowling to dismiss the opener who was looking dangerous.

Hewlins (1-36) bowled a tidy spell once more to keep the pressure on the away side in the middle of the innings.

Before Mason (4-30) came into the attack and ripped through Bournemouth’s six, seven, eight and nine in no time.

He was on the brink of a five-wicket haul but a catch went down at deep square leg to prevent this from happening.

McNeilly (1-8) then took the final wicket to secure a comfortable victory to make it 4/5 wins for the season.

Next up is a trip to face Ferndown Wayferers on Saturday.
