BOYD HILTON

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Bramshaw Legend Boyd Hilton at the far too young age of 62. Boyd played his first game for Bramshaw in 1990 and played 22 seasons in total playing in over 280 games. Boyd was one of the most talented cricketers to have ever played for the club scoring over 6600 runs including 3881 for the first team for whom he always played his best innings. His best season was 1991 in which he scored a then-record 693 runs for the first team which is a record that stood until 2010. He scored a great deal of his runs with a powerful cut shot and a glorious cover drive. Boyd was also easily the best slip fielder in the history of the club plucking some absolute blinders from nowhere as well as making tough chances appear routine. Finally, Boyd holds the record for being stretchered off the pitch as the most injury-prone player in the club’s history!

Boyd will be greatly missed by the Bramshaw Cricket family and our best wishes go to his family. Boyd’s funeral will be held at the Wessex Vale Crematorium in West End on the 30th September at 1 pm. All are invited to attend.

The presentation day was another fantastic success with the biggest turnout we have ever had. As Arthur mentioned there are so many people to thank for another fantastic season but Arthur himself, Brian Hart the secretary and Phil Curl the treasurer deserve special thanks for everything they do to make our club such a success.

2019 BCC FANTASY CRICKET

Bailey Loveless won the 2019 Fantasy Cricket League brought to you by BDM Mechanical Services. Tom Arnold was the top-scoring player after a fantastic season. Thanks to everyone who played and a big thanks to our sponsor.

1S WIN WITH A FAULTLESS PERFORMANCE

Ginge lost the toss again on a scorcher of a day at Odiham and unsurprisingly the opposition decided to bat. Joe and the skipper opened up with the former swinging the ball nicely, tempting the opening bat into a big drive which was skied and excellently caught by Dan Eckton. Coombs (3-29) continued to tease the edge resulting in the other opener snicking behind to Tom followed by another good catch from Eckton at point. It was then time for the four spinners who took steady wickets, in particular Tarty (2-22) and Plume (2-27). The Odiham innings ended on 159 with a direct hit from Eckton who rounded off a fantastic afternoon in the field for Bram. Andy and Tom started positively, looking comfortable at the crease picking off any loose deliveries. Arnold batted sensibly knowing that time wouldn’t be an issue; the runs continued to flow freely for Hart who raced to 50, driving the ball beautifully. The pair rotated well during some good bowling from the opposition spinners as the target came into sight. With not many runs to play with both openers nearing their respective milestones, Tom then brought up his 7th half-century of the season, humbly playing the role of understudy as he gave Hart the strike who struck a magnificent six to get the away side over the line as well as reaching his second league ton of the season. A wonderful batting performance gave Bram a ten-wicket win and gave them a slither of hope for promotion with one game remaining.

1STS WIN

Sarisbury won the toss and elected to bat getting off to a good start losing their first wicket in the 26th over. However, the spin twins of Jonty and Dan came on and bowled beautifully to go for a combined 3 for 45 off 18 overs which swung the game Bramshaw’s way. A flurry of quick wickets towards the end stemmed the runs and set the 1sts 169 to win. In reply, Tom and Andy were looking steady putting on 46 before both were dismissed within 4 overs of each other. Zane joined man of the match Dan for a sublime 100 partnership where both batsmen looked in control and with passionate support from the watching second team they saw the team home. 2 more big wins and other results going our way and the firsts could burgle promotion!

1STS AND 2NDS BOTH WIN

The 1sts batted first at Steep and were in early trouble losing 4 quick wickets before Simon Booth joined Tom Arnold putting on 39. J-Mac joined Tom with 5 overs to go and together they scored 55 crucial runs. Tom never looked in trouble throughout and played a majestic and faultless innings of 136 which when the next highest score on both sides was 25 shows what an influential and dominant innings it was. In reply Ginge bowled well picking up 3 wickets supported by Jack before Jonty bowled beautifully picking up 4 wickets. Ben Chandler also picked up his first wicket for the firsts. Well batted Tom! The 2nds won a difficult game at home scoring 206 with Dan Eckton top scoring with 51. In reply, the opposition looked to be in control before a run-out changed the game leaving them 25 runs short. 2 Great wins!

2S KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING WITH ANOTHER WIN

Kaush lost the toss and was asked to bowl first. Sam and Ben kept things tight before Mangel and Barnold bowled tightly without any luck. Bailey then came on and went for 15 in his first over picking up the first wicket. A Ben Arnold run out and 2 wickets from the big man had Paultons in a difficult position. Dan (1-15) and Kaush (3-12 cleaned up the rest. As Paultons were all out for 150 After a great tea Kaush fell early but Loz and George remained solid and kept the score ticking over before accelerating the score to chase down 151 with 10 overs left to win by 9 wickets and collect max points.

1S WIN AWAY AT BASINGSTOKE

On a cloudy windy Saturday afternoon. Bramshaw’s 1st eleven took on Basingstoke’s third team. Mike won the toss and after some early morning showers, it proved a good toss to win because, within the first 10 overs, Bramshaw had Basingstoke at 48 for 5, Mike bowling with pace and swing took their No2 and No3 in quick succession. Jack Booth bowled tight to keep Basingstoke at bay and was rewarded with their other opening batsman playing onto a short-pitch delivery from Jack. Jonty, JMac and Tarty added a few more wickets before Mike came back to finish off the last two wickets, of Basingstoke innings with 3 overs to spare and finishing 184 all out. Bramshaw’s innings, more or less starting the same as Basingstoke with Tom, Simon and Jack all falling early in the innings. Matt Reeve came to the crease and looked in fine form, considering how long he’s been away to support Tarty who was looking determined to stay there and build an inning, however, Matt fell bringing Joe to the crease and it wasn’t long before he put his mark on the game with some big sixes. Joe got to his well-deserved fifty before getting out but man of the match Tarty saw us through to the end with a well-organised and constructed century.

A TEAM KEEP TITLE HOPES ALIVE

The A-Team beat Trojans by 118 runs. Batting first Tom Arnold and Joe Coombs got the team off to a flyer before Andy Hart (99*) and Lawrence Reeve scored the joint second-best ever BL 3rd wicket stand with 119 to take the team to a massive 211. In reply, Trojans always were struggling with Bailey and Josh both picking up 3 wickets and Andy taking his 200th catch for the club.

B TEAM RECORDS VITAL

Bowling first, Sam Dempster 2-11 and Dec Mason 0-10 started well keeping it tight. Tom Mason 2-15 and Jonty Loveless 1-17 then continued the fine start to leave the hosts struggling in the middle of the innings. The run rate continued to be controlled as Jimmy Manning 2-17 and Dave Streather 0-11 bowled tidly, to limit the hosts to just 85 from their 18 overs. Sam Browes and Nick Jarvis opened up and got the side off to a strong start, sharing 24 for the first wicket before the former was dismissed. Terry Harrison 43* then came in and finished the game off brilliantly with some huge hits to see the side to victory in just 10 overs. A vital win after a couple of defeats which should be enough to stay clear of relegation for this season.

1STS WIN

Bramshaw was put in the field on another hot Saturday. Ginge and Jack opened the bowling and both caused problems in the first 10. Booth got the breakthrough forcing an edge to Barnold at gully. Wickets fell regularly after that with Plume bowling nicely on a deck that offered some spin. Redlynch number 5 left-hander scored a quick 20+ that helped the score along with some lusty blows. At the other end, the bowlers were shared around Josh bowling a hostile spell with good pace and forced an lbw and even a sharp bumper was fired down too! At the other end, Plume was still causing problems and picked up 4 wickets! At 140-8 Bramshaw was looking to wrap the innings up but the tail Enders wagged and Redlynch were bowled out for 186. Hart with the final wicket! A competitive score on the wicket that kept low one end and offered something for the spinners. After an early loss of Tom in the second over Bramshaw started very quickly, Hart and Plume putting on a 50+ partnership. Plume 28 chipping one to cover brought young Jack Booth in. Hart dismissed LBW soon after for a fantastic 54 some powerful hitting down the ground! This gave Redlynch some hope who were let back in the game. Coombs scored freely finding the ropes comfortably with some hitting over the top and J Booth was being patient down the other end. At 120-3, Bramshaw was sitting pretty with plenty of overs left in the tank. Redlynch fought back again picking up another 2 wickets. Zane started brightly with a lovely clip of the legs for 4. At 160-5 off 30 overs, Jack Booth was still going strong and decided to wrap this game up early. The leg spinner came back on and threw one up for Jack to dispatch for 6 over mid-on. The over went for 17 with 2 bombs. D’Monte hit the winning runs and Bramshaw went past 186 with 12 overs to spare. J Booth ended up on 34 not out.

2NDS WIN

Kaush lost the toss again, and Bram took to the field, Mark and Dec continuing where they left off last week, beating the edge and restricting the flow of runs. The pressure paid off with the Laverstock opener chipping one up to cover, Chandler took the catch after a well-controlled juggle. The other opening bat was steady but didn’t look like scoring, whilst the next few bats looked to get a move on; but it wasn’t to be as a sensational spell from Ben Chandler (3-12) ripped through their dangermen. Chris Hewlins contained excellently at the other end (1-26) when called upon by the skipper. Bram recovered well though, with Mangel (2-33), Dec, Jonty and an over from Kaush, restricting Laverstock to 166-9 from their 40 overs. Gary and Kaush opened up for the home side and got off to a good start, punishing any loose bowling, before the former was out LBW. Jonty then joined his captain at the crease, and the pair kept the runs ticking along nicely as Patel (55) reached his 3rd half-century in a week, before being caught driving down the ground. Junior Eckton joined Loveless – the two of them dug in well, soaking up the pressure and picking off stray deliveries, maintaining the required rate. Loveless (35) snicked off with roughly ten overs remaining. Mark, feeling dizzy up at 5 unfortunately couldn’t recreate his heroics from Penton, but a much-needed cameo from Ben Westhead (21) put the hosts in a comfortable position. Ben Chandler, carrying an injury managed to see Bram home alongside Dan (18*) with just 7 balls remaining for a 5-wicket win. A wonderful team performance, with everyone chipping in throughout the game, was hailed by the captain as the best win of the season. The seconds move closer to the promotion spots as momentum builds!

DAN ECKTON SPINS IT TO WIN IT

The seconds had a great win away at Penton. Batting first no one got going but everyone chipped in to get a score of 152. The opposition was looking good at 103/4 before Dan Eckton bowled beautifully to take 6 wickets supported by Jonty Loveless to bowl the opposition out for the win. The firsts lost a close game at home – Dan Plume and Mike Kingston took the team to a good score of over 200 but a poor fielding performance from the team didn’t help and the opposition won with 3 balls to spare.

TOP OF THE LEAGUE

The seconds maintained their perfect start to the season with a max points win with Lawrence Reeve scoring a magnificent 136 as the team racked up 270 before bowling the opposition out for 89. The firsts also had a max point win bowling out their opposition for 117 before Tom Arnold steered the team home with a controlled 47* – 2 more great wins!

B-TEAM BEATEN

Whiteparish racked up an impressive 165-1 that always looked out of reach. Ben Chandler (4-1-8-0) bowled superbly amid the carnage. Julian Drake (43), debutant Sam Browes (25) and a meaty 44 from Terry Harrison were the only double-figure contributions in the B’s reply of 129-8.

ALL THREE TEAMS WIN

All three teams won on the same Saturday for the first time since June 2017. The Firsts had a great team win at East Woodhay. Tom Arnold and Dan Plume put on a 100 partnership before Johnny Murray came in and smashed a quick 20 to take the team to 184 all out. Mike Kingston was the pick of the bowlers taking 2 wickets with Josh Arnold picking up a wicket with his first ball back at Bramshaw. Johnny Murray finished the innings with a great run out to seal victory by 14 runs. The seconds had a great win at home with Ben Chandler bowling a very tidy spell and Ben Arnold picking up a couple bowling Cadnam out for 91 which was knocked off with ease. Redlynch thirds were ripped apart by a new ball burst from Bramshaw third’s Sergio D’Monte as he took the first four wickets to fall at a personal cost of eight runs, in his first competitive game in men’s cricket. All five visiting bowlers picked up wickets, Chris Hewlins and Tom Mason (two each) with Finn Mobbs and Simon Smith one apiece. 91 all out never looked enough, and so it proved, with Hewlins (31 not) and George Gray (21) leading the way to a seven-wicket win.

STREATHER SMASHES TON AS B-TEAM WIN

The Border League B team got off to a winning start at home to Redlynch A. Ian Tanner and Dave Webber went along at nearly 12 an over in their opening stand of 114. The rate was eased by a four-wicket burst from Terry Harrison (4-21), and Redlynch closed on 147-7 in their 15 overs. An astonishing innings from Brendan Streather of 101 not out however took the B team home by nine wickets with 9 balls to spare.

BRAMSHAW THROUGH TO ROUND 2 OF VKO

A great team performance saw Bramshaw beat Tichborne in the first round of the Village Knockout. Bowling first the opposition was restricted to 191 off their 40 overs with Joe Coombs being the pick of the bowlers taking 2-24. In reply, Jack Booth and Andy Hart put on 50 for the opening stand before Joe Coombs settled in with a nice 48. Jonty Loveless then smashed two fours for the win.

FIRST WIN OF THE YEAR

Dan Plume scored a fantastic 100* on his Club Xl debut stroking the ball all around the vast Hursely Park ground. Supported by Andy Hart (81) and a quickfire 25* at the end from Tom Arnold the team reached their target of 235 with an over to spare. Hursley Park scored 235 off their 40 overs batting first which could have been much higher if not for a very good spell of death bowling from Chris Hewlins. Ben Arnold and Sergio D’Monte were the pick of the other bowlers. Great win!

THE INDOOR TEAM ENDED UP IN THIRD

The indoor team finished the season in 3rd place in the top division of the indoor league, which is a fantastic achievement. Captain Kinger was the team’s top scorer with 199 runs and Mac-a-roo was the leading wicket-taker with 10 wickets.
