CLUB XL FINISH SEASON ON A HIGH
The Club X1 won emphatically at sunny Bartley on Sunday in the last match of the season. A cautious skipper won the toss and asked Bartley to take first knock, and used seven bowlers as Bramshaw restricted their hosts to 189-5 at tea. (Jonty, Dan E, Chris H, Declan and Bailey each took a wicket). Former Nomansland batter Chris Walton, who last picked up a bat in Nomansland’s final match before the club merger, renewed his opening partnership with Gary Loveless. The pair started carefully, matching each other all the way to the late forties, before Walton went up about three gears. Drinks were taken with the stand on 150 at 20 overs, when Loveless retired on 53, with Walton on 94. Walton also retired when he reached his century in the next over. Ben Fryer (7), Ritesh (13 not) and Captain Bailey (5 not) completed the win to end the season on a high.
COME AND SUPPORT THE 3RDS
The 3rd team have their last league game on Saturday 1st Sept and it will be played at Bramshaw. Come and watch the team!
3RDS WIN
The thirds lost at Shrewton in a patchy display. Heavy overnight rain had left the wicket very wet, and Phil Curl inserted the hosts. The wicket played pretty well however, and the decision back fired as the bounce got lower as the match progressed. Shrewton scored a useful 207 all out at tea, with the evergreen Kevin Gray taking 4-31. The reply started well enough, but from 35-0 (Simon Smith 30) the wickets started to fall, and an all bowled hat trick in the middle of the innings as the ball kept low didn’t help! Nine wickets fell for just 55, but at 90-9, a last wicket partnership of 51 from Ritesh (24 not) and Kev Gray (27) gave the score at air of respectability but could not hide the feeling of disappointment.
1STS WIN TO GUARANTEE SAFETY
A very young 1st team travelled to idyllic Odiham CC today with both Ben Chandler & Declan Mason making their 1st team debuts. Batting first the team lost regular wickets but Joe Coombs anchored the innings with a majestic 91* supported by cameos from a number of players including both the debutantes (Dec and Joe put on 42 which was the highest partnership of the day) to take the score to 219. Captain Michael Kingston bowled beautifully in reply taking 3-26 supported by Bailey Loveless who bowled very economically, Mark Angel who rolled back the years and the best all round Bramshaw fielding display (especially Ben Chandler who saved at least 25 runs on his own) in recent memory which restricted the home team to 204. A Great team win!
SUNDAY THRILLER
The Club’s Sunday side came out on the right side of a narrow 1 run victory against a competitive Singh Xl at Bramshaw yesterday. Bailey won the toss and elected to bat first on a sweltering day at Bramshaw with Alan Howarth and Dec Mason opening up, but both fell cheaply for single figure scores. The next four bats, Ben Fryer (10), Tom Mason (16), Bailey Loveless (22) and Jesse Winter (15) all made starts before Tom Arnold (62*) showed his class, but was running out of partners when Jonty Loveless (16) was dismissed. However, he shared a brilliant unbroken stand of 72 in just 7 overs with Gary Loveless to get the side up to a competitive tea score of 215. Arnold and B Loveless opened up following the break and between them picked up three early wickets to reduce the hosts to 30-3 inside six overs. Some big hitting from the visitors followed with 79 being added before Gary claimed the key scalp of the numbers 4 and 5 who had scored 56 and 43 respectively. The away side for the large part were in control of the chase and had raced to 165-5 from 21 overs with just 51 required from 14 overs. Some more big hits took the visitors to 199-6 25 and it appeared that the game had gone. Up stepped Bailey and Arnold to try and get the final few wickets with Arnold beating the bat a number of times without luck, before Bailey claimed two quick wickets which saw Singh placed on 202-8. Due to the visitors only having 10 players their skipper requested that they played last man standing which was agreed and it nearly came back to haunt the hosts. The 9th wicket fell with the score on 209 and just a further 7 needed. Their number 10 hit some good shots, but Bailey was to have the last laugh having him caught behind at the second attempt for 10 to pick up a deserved fiver and earn the club a win by one run.
1STS WIN
Batting first Andy Hart (68) and Simon Booth (who went past 6000 runs in the first team scoring 56) put on 132 for the first wicket which helped the team score 240 in their 45 overs. In reply Mike Kingston took 5-42 and Ben Arnold picked up 2 wickets to bowl out Ventnor 2s for 168.
3s LOSE CLOSE WON
The three’s had the game against Hyde two’s at their mercy two or three times, before eventually losing by 14 runs. The visitors were 32-4, 67-6 and 90-7 before their tale wagged and their tea score of 181-9 looked useful. Simon Smith (4-27) and Kev Gray (3-9) both from 8 overs, looked to have broken the back of the innings before the revival. The three’s top five all got double figure starts in the reply, but from 111-3 in the 22nd over they collapsed to 132-8. Kev Gray, Phil and Hannah Curl all battled away adding 35, but they were all out for 167 to lose by 14 runs. Debutant Sam McDonald with 36 top scored.
QUIZ NIGHT
The 2018 Quiz Night will be held up the club on Friday the 17th August starting at 7.30pm. Teams of 4/5 can enter – cash prize for the winner!
1STS WIN
The first were put into bat at Compton and Chandlers Ford and Andy Hart scored a very patient 43 and with Jack Booth scoring 21 helped the team to a very competitive total of 172 on a very hard pitch to score. In reply the Bramshaw bowlers attacked the stumps and blew away the opposition for 74 with J-Mac picking up 4 wickets and Ginge and Davros 3 a piece. Great win!
3s WIN
The thirds pulled off a superb win against their Redlynch counterparts by 9 wickets on Saturday. Phil Curl inserted the hosts, but despite an early wicket, they proceeded to 83-2 after 18 overs, and looked in charge. Debutant George Fullerton, after an uncertain start, then proceeded to run through the card and finished with 6-31 from his eight overs, and Redlynch were all out for 153 after 34 overs. Skipper Curl excelled in the field taking three great catches, the second of which was a bit special, In his own words, certainly not a piece of cake! Openers Simon Smith (61 not out) and the flamboyant Harry Burnham (72) took the visitors just three from victory before Burnham fell LBW, but Ben Freyer edged the winning four to bring up the maximum point win with eleven overs to spare.
B TEAM LOSE PLATE FINAL
After a great start the Tuesday B team let Tytherley right back into the game and paid the price. At the 15 minute rain break Tytherley were 63-4 from 12 and looking likely to get around the 110 mark at best, but a host of extras and bowling with a wet ball enabled their opponents to amass 134-6. The B’s batting has been consistent all year but they failed in this crucial match, being rolled over for just 75 as the game finished in virtual darkness.
BOTH BL TEAMS LOSE LAST LEAGUE GAMES
The B team’s league season ended with a twenty five run defeat against Redlynch A. Chasing the visitors 183 target, Contributions came from Julian Drake (43), Sam Larbelastier (19), Terry H (16) and unbeaten knocks from Lewis Oliver (27) and Dan Eckton (21) as they finished on 168-6. The A-Team lost at Calmore.
VIC LOVELESS 1925 – 2018
Vic Loveless – family man, cricketer and writer passed away last week at the age of 93. I write this obituary sadly, but happy in the knowledge that it was the right time for Vic to declare his long innings closed. His involvement in local cricket was extraordinary. He was a Calmore CC stalwart, instrumental in the planning and completion of Calmore’s new ground at Loperwood. He then took on Nomansland CC’s chairmanship and was at the helm when NCC’s new pavilion was built. He also found time to help create the NFCCA in 1963, and was still that organisation’s President at the time of his passing. He was a Hampshire Cricket League Vice President and held the same post at Bramshaw. His legacy for Bramshaw is quite simple. Two of his sons, Ian and Gary have captained the second and third elevens, and five of his grandsons are playing for the club – Jonty, Bailey, James, Tommy and Declan. Son Roger and grandson Carl played for Nomansland too. He will be sadly missed by the Hampshire Cricket fraternity. His funeral is at Bramshaw Church on 26th July at 12.15pm.
As and Bs win
The A-Team had a rare win at East Tytherley. Batting first the A-Team scored 117 with Mike Kingston top scorering. In reply Tytherley were restricted to 111 with Dan La Plume bowling superbly taking 2-9 off his 4 overs. A great win! The B team won by 40 runs against M&T to secure their safety in div 1. It came at a cost as Tom Mason split the webbing on his hand attempting a catch off his own bowling. Julian Drake held the B teams batting together assisted by Sam Larbelastier (27), Terry Harrison (14) and Ben Chandler (17*), and finished agonisingly on 99*as the B team finished on 173-4. Tight bowing from Ben Arnold 4-0-15-0, Terry H, 4-1-14-0 and Jonty L 3-1-9-1 made sure M&T finished well short of the target.
THIRDS LOSE CLOSE ONE
The three’s batted first against Wilton, and the two old stagers, stand in skipper Simon Smith (73) and Vince McMahon (66*) took the batting honours. The three’s closed on 213-6, a total that looked about 30 short of par. This was proved right as Wilton’s three top batters took them almost home, before minor flurry of wickets had the visitors scampering to pad up. Dan Murray took two in three balls, but the visitors ran out winners by 5 wickets. Murray (2-26) David Hill (1-20) and Ritesh (1-48) were the wicket takers.
BOTH BL TEAMS IN FINAL
Traffic problems meant the B team had to shuffle their batting order, and they were 22-2 after 5 overs at Lyndhurst in their ‘double header’ league and plate semi. Sam Larbalastier (18) held firm as Jimmy Manning’s blistering 54 lifted the rate, and useful contributions down the order from Julian Drake (26), Lewis Oliver (13) and James Mason (11 not) boosted the B’s to 139-7. Lyndhurst started in a rush with twenty from the first two overs, but Ben Arnold’s miserly four overs put the brake on. Terry Harrison (2-20 from 4) took the first two wickets, and at 79-2, a super throw from Ben Chandler took the third wicket. This started the slide and Lyndhurst collapsed losing their last 7 wickets for just 15, as Dan Eckton (3-8) and Sam Dempster (4-19) finished the job. The A-Team easily beat Langley to progress to the cup final which will be held at Langley Manor on the 31st July.
B-TEAM LOSE
Jimmy Taylor’s unbeaten 98 saw T&E to a score of 198-2 on Tuesday against the B team. Sam Larbelastier made a first appearance for a few weeks and scored a sparkling 58 as the B’s went at nine an over until the tenth, but they crashed from 90-1 to 111-6 before Sam Dempster (30 not) and James Mason (12 not) added 44 in just 3 and a bit overs to bring respectability as they closed on 155-7.
3S WIN
Shrewton played their innings at a frantic pace throughout, being 60-4 after just four overs, and 137-6 after 12! The rate at last fell below 10 in the 16th over, but they still raced to an all out 199, in the 24th over. There were some interesting bowling figures, but suffice it to say Kev Marshall (3) Phil Curl and Tommy Mason(2 each) and Alan Jones with 1 were the wicket takers. The three’s reply was more sedate with the calm heads of Phil Curl (36) and Harry Burnham going at four an over in their stand of 84. Ben Freyer (23) and Burnham (41) added another 48, but the asking rate had climbed to seven’s by the time Kev Marshall (27) and Tommy Mason (17) got to work. Both went with only ten required but the tail wagged with suicidal singles being grabbed, and a four from Alan Jones. With just 3 needed from three balls, a no-ball was turned into three runs due to some great awareness from Hannah Curl, who called loudly for a leg bye, which in turn led to an overthrow as well to see her side home. There was almost a half century of extras that helped the cause no end!
100 OPENING PARTNERSHIP SETS UP 1STS WIN
Brendan (57) and Andy (99) scored their fist opening century stand together to set up a good platform for the firsts. The middle order then collapsed before Kaushal arrived and peppered the leg side boundary to score a quickfire 33 to give the team a total of 264. The opposition then were set a reduced target of 241 off 38 overs and were pegged back straight away by some excellent bowling by Ginge who finished with 4 wickets. Jamie and Joe also picked up 2 wickets a piece and the oppo were bowled out. Good team performance.
THIRDS LOSE
For the fourth time this season the thirds went into a game with ten men. The council pitch in Andover was poorly prepared to say the least, and it was no surprise when the thirds were asked to bat first. Simon Smith (24) and Harry Burnham (18) together with a swathe of extras put on 60 in just under 20 overs, but then the side were all out for 90 ten overs later, with James Mason the only other double figure scorer. Thruxton crawled at less than 2 per over for the first third of the innings, with Kev Gray and Tom Mason (2-20) keeping a lid on things. Three wickets then fell for two runs to leave the home side 55-5 (Ben Chandler 1-15, James Mason 2-14), but the home skipper looked a different class and saw his team home without further loss.
A-TEAM INTO SEMIS
The A-Team beat Redlynch in the quarters of the Cup. Batting first Ginge and Tom Arnold rescued a dismal start to get the team to a good total of 123. In reply Redlynch started well before Andy Hart came on and took 3 quick wickets supported by Bailey and DD who both picked up a wicket each.
JIMMY SMASHES B TEAM TO WIN
An amazing 365 runs were scored at Nomansland as the Tuesday B team pulled of an unexpected victory over Calmore in the Plate. Paul Proudley (82 not) and Mike West (44) were the main contributors as Calmore racked up 192-4 in their 18 overs. Julian Drake and Jonty Loveless (37) provided the base for the chase with a stand of 68 in just over eight overs. Sam Dempster went for 6, but Jimmy Manning (61, including 7 maximums) added 90 with Drake in just six and a bit overs. Terry Harrison (8 not out) and Drake who finished on 69 not out, saw the B’s home with 4 balls to spare.
LOCAL WRITER REPORTS ON BORDER LEAGUE WIN

1ST TEAM WIN
The firsts travelled to New Milton and bowling first restricted the opposition to 44/1 off their first 20 overs with Mike Kingston bowling ridiculously well, deserving loads more than the one wicket he took (a worldy catch in the gully by J-Mac). Mike was supported by swinger Josephine Coombs who was very economical in his 9 over spell. New Milton ended up on 201 on a lovely batting track after a good all round team performance. In reply Brenda got off to a flyer scoring a quickfire 40 supported by Tarty, Boothy and Zane to ease home with a couple of overs to spare. Good team performance!
THIRD TEAM LOSE
The ten man three’s went down to a disappointing defeat against Laverstock 2’s. The visitors were off to a flyer- 70-1 from nine overs. Most of the home bowlers were going at seven or eight an over with the exception of Simon Smith- 3-28 from his 8 overs- as Laverstock were bowled out for 223 in 35 0vers. The three’s were in disarray at 9-2 in the fourth over in their reply, but Dan Eckton dug in, assisted by Harry Burnham (19) and then Ben Chandler (21), but were 63-4 after 20 overs. Eckton and Simon Smith then combined in an unbroken stand of 103 to close the innings respectably on 166-4, Eckton on 56 and Smith with 36.
A-TEAM WIN
Batting first the A-Team scored a decent150 off their 18 overs with B Streather and Tom Arnold both hitting 40s. In reply Calmore struggled with J-Mac and Josh picking up 5 wickets between them before Andy Hart came on to rip through the tail taking 4 wickets for just 2 runs to bowl Calmore out for just 60.
B-TEAM LOSE CLOSE ONE
The Tuesday B team lost a cracking game at Redlynch. Redlynch scored freely early on, but Dan Eckton with 3-30 put in an excellent spell. Redlynch scored a commanding 144-5, and the huge outfield played a part in the reply. A slow start (12-1 from 4) meant that nine an over was needed from then on. Sam Dempster (46) was the anchor, backed up by Julian Drake (28) and kept up the rate. James Manning (15, I maximum) and Terry Harrison (14, 2 maximums) both went to catches in the deep. The rate was still being achieved until the 16th, when only two runs were forthcoming, and the B’s closed on 132-7.
10 MEN THREES WIN
The ten men of the threes picked up a surprise win at Hyde two’s. At 86-3 Hyde looked set for a useful total, but incredibly lost 6 wickets for 6 runs at that point. They finished on 106 all out, with Tom Mason picking up a league best 4-16, and Kev Marshall 3-5 in his first bowl for 5 years! After a breezy start from Alan Haworth (22), the three’s took their time with useful runs from Wayne Eckton (29), Kev Marshall (28 not) and Ben Chandler (10 not) taking them home by 7 wickets with 8 overs to spare.
JUNIOR MURRAY STARS IN 1STS WIN
Bowling first the firsts chipped away at Portsmouth 2 with regular wickets bowling them out for 137. Mark Angel bowled with no luck and Joe “Shermanator” Coombs picked up 3 wickets before the Burgler came on and snaffled the last 3. In reply late call up Johnny Murray smashed the ball all over the forest for a quickfire fifty to see the team home.
3rds WIN
A real team effort saw the three’s magic up a win against their Redlynch counterparts. Four twenty plus scores from Simon Smith (22), John Roberts (27), Tom Mason (league best 33) and Phil Curl (27 not) saw the three’s run up a useful 197-9 at tea. The bowling was backed up with some great catching, with the two old masters Phil Curl (2-6 from 5) and Kev Gray (3-16) leading the way. The visitors slumped from a useful 86-3 to 117 all out.
BRENDA AND JOHNNY SMASH TOTTON
Brendan “Smashie” Streather (97) and Johnny “Nicey” Murray (57) continued their new BL opening partnership and scored a record equalling 166 opening partnership by smashing the ball all over Totton before Brendan fell just short of his century. The team ended up on 199 and Totton kept losing wickets to fall 50 runs short. On to the next round!
BL B-TEAM WIN
With a host of absentees, the Tuesday B team were according to Ben Arnold, an ‘Eclectic mix’. Sam Larbelastier went first over, but Julian Drake (34) and Rich White (21) righted the ship, before Ryan O’Connor (26 not) and Luca Roberts (17), both coming in to the side at the last minute, pushed the score on to 128-7 from their 18. Lyndhurst and Ashurst started slowly against Arnold (1-18) and Terry Harrison (2-22) and never really threatened finishing on 116-7. Lewis Oliver 3-13 was the pick.
BRAMSHAW PROGRESS TO REGIONAL SEMI’S IN VKO
Bramshaw welcomed the Southern League’s Langley Manor in the National Village Cup. After winning the toss Langley batted first and an excellent bowling and fielding display from the home team resulted in them being bowled out for 201. Bailey Loveless bowled the ball of the century to remove the Langley Captain with Kaushal Patel picking up a couple of key wickets and David Streather bowling beautifully at the end for 3/22. In reply Bramshaw were in trouble losing 3 quick wickets to the Langley openers before classy Zane D’Monte & vexatious Joe Coombs put together a crucial stand of 112 putting the home team in control. Terry Tibbs Harrison took the game away from Langley with a rapid 39 before a mini collapse made the game interesting. Kaush Patel kept his calm to see the team home and into the next round.
BOOTH STARS FOR 3s
The ten man 3’s took a pounding on the plastic at Wilton, but emerged with ten points after a creditable fightback. Wilton were all out for 300, with Jack Booth (4-21) debutant Ben Chandler (4-63) and Tom Mason (2-51) the wicket takers, as they picked up maximum bowling points. The 3’s replied solidly looking to bank some batting points and Jack Booth and Dan Eckton (19)put on 50 for the first wicket, and Booth and Wayne Eckton (34) added 86 for the second before Booth went for a career best 68. The fifth batting point arrived in the 39th over as the visitors closed on 157-5.

BRAMSHAW INTO SECOND ROUND OF VKO
Bramshaw won in the first round of the National Village cup at Longparish. Batting first, Andy Hart anchored the innings of 230 scoring an unbeaten 115 supported by Simon Booth. In reply Longparish got off to a flyer before Jamie Martin and Joe Coombs pegged them back with some good bowling. The last wicket fell to a Bailey Loveless runout. The team are into the second round next Sunday where they will play Langley Manor at home.
3rds WIN
The three’s recovered from a precarious 64-6 to post 191-7 at Nomansland. The first ball of the season saw Jonty Loveless trudge back to his hutch, and apart from George Gray’s lively 34, the thirds had lost the first 6 wickets by the nineteenth over. Harry Burnham (41) and Chris Hewlins repaired the damage with a stand of 85, and Hewlins (63 not) then added another unbroken 42 with the unorthodox Tom Mason who finished on 24 not out. Whiteparish two’s started slowly and Bramshaw picked up wickets steadily and the visitors closed on 128-9 after their 40 overs. Jack Booth took 4-21, John Murray 2-10, and one each for Dec Mason, Jonty Loveless, and Dan Eckton.
