Match Report – 2nds Hammered despite positive bowling display

by Tom Mason

Playing against Brockenhurst we lost the toss and were inevitably asked to field. Richard and Phil opened up the bowling and got us off to a tidy start with the first wicket coming through a superb catch from Charlie which he didn’t know an awful lot about. Batsmen number 2&3 built a massive partnership of well over 100 this was after seeing them both dropped. Phil and Rich then ended their spells allowing Kaush and Charlie to come on and bowl which worked well as it was being kept tight at both ends. Then came a dramatic turn of events with there being three wickets in just four balls, firstly I sparked a run out then took two catches which for me wouldn’t usually happen in a season which meant that we were well back in the game at this point. Another couple of wickets got us back in control of this match and with the fielding being so excellent it meant that we were able to build some pressure back on Brockenhurst. A few more wickets began to fall and they ended up on 241-8 from their 42 overs which would mean that it would be a more than competitive score.

After a great tea, Matt R and Boyd opened up with Boyd falling without troubling the scorers. This meant that John Roberts was in and he lasted a while before he was out bringing Rich C to the wicket. These two batted for a couple of overs until Matt was run out at the bowler’s end. After this dismissal, it was looking unlikely that we would reach past 50. This meant that Kaush joined Rich who was then out meaning that Kaush was on strike and he was out the very next ball meaning that I was coming in to face the hat-trick ball. I somehow survived it and then went on to get some runs including hitting a six in the process. Soon after George R was out and this meant Tom H was in and he was soon in and amongst the runs. I then played a stupid shot and was out for 15. This brought in Phil who was just trying to frustrate them by blocking it. Not long after Tom H was out which brought Charlie to the wicket and he had got a few runs before becoming the next batter out. This meant that John C was in and with the score on 49 it seemed liked Phil was out but it was signalled as a front foot no-ball. This meant that we got to fifty and soon after John C was out meaning we had only accumulated 50 and somehow I ended up with the top score of 15.

A disappointing result but the bowling and fielding were very positive so it’s something to work on for next week’s game at home to Aderholt.
