Sunday team fall to narrow defeat against Porchester
10 June 2013 Club XI v Portchester
by Tom Mason
Bowling first with J. Murray and Tarty opening up starting well and J. Murray found the edge and I took a straightforward catch to get us underway. After some more tight bowling, they finished their respective spells and I came on and picked up some wickets trying to keep it tight despite them getting a fair few funs and with wickets going down at the other end they were in deep trouble at 60-6. Despite this, their lower order batted well despite some great bowling from Dave Cooper. After that Declan and Andy h came on with runs going to all parts pretty much and they raced past 150. They’re lower order continued to do well and they were soon going up towards 250 with a few more overs going past they were on for a very big score. Tarty and Joe came on to try to limit the runs and limited the runs but couldn’t find that wicket despite me dropping a catch in the last over. In the end, they got 270+ a lot more than they should off being 60-6.
After an excellent tea Brian and Boyd opened up Brian hit his first ball for a lovely shot for two before he got bowled the next ball. This brought in Andy who got out relatively quickly before Joe who hit some good shots and soon after Boyd got out after hitting some nice shots. This brought in a new boy Chris who batted well with Joe for a while until Joe got caught. This brought J. Murray in with still a lot required but we knew a win was still in the reckoning with the batting we had and still available being very good. Not long after Chris got out. Andy was then in batting very nicely and if we could keep this going a victory was still on the cards. These two continued to bat well knowing that Tarty was next meant that this could be getting very close. Then another wicket fell and Tarty was in and he played his natural game before another wicket fell bringing Declan in and we knew that if we could just see out one end then tarty could just go on the attack and this proved right. After hitting a four Declan got out. Meaning I was in and I got a few runs and stayed in for quite a while leaving Tarty to hit substantial runs. I was then out with still thirty required tarty continued to bat well before he got out bowled on 99 meaning we lost by about 20 runs.
